Junior Master Chef!

Every second week, the year 7's and 8's at our school get to attend technology classes at our local high school. These classes are Hard materials (working with wood), Food technology, jewellery making - working with bone and greenstone, metal work, Fabric and sewing. The year 7's and 8's are split up into year levels and both learn new and very different things.

Every trip this term the year 7's are making a wooden box for holding pens and pencils, crafting everything themselves,  even the cute little design on the front!  The year 8's (including me!) are doing cooking!  This is very exciting for me as I love to cook.  Last trip we made focaccia bread - from scratch!  If you don't know what type of bread this is, it's a flat Italian bread.  Some of the ingredients we used were: sundried tomatoes, olives, basil, and of course yeast and flour!  This week we made an Italian style fettuccine pasta.  The sauce we made included tomatoes, carrot, garlic, basil and lots of olive oil.  You can't smell it from the photo, but I can tell you from experience it tastes delicioso!

The finished product

We learnt how to make the pasta from scratch, and lots of different techniques for slicing and dicing.  I'm not sure what we are making next time but I am looking forward to it already!

This is a fantastic description of what you've been doing in technology. I like how you've also described both the Y7 and Y8 program and included details like the ingredients.

This course sounds fantastic. I am 34 and when I was in Primary school we used to do things like you've described.
But we don't offer those subjects in SA anymore.

    1. wow! you are from south Africa that is so very exciting to hear from some one so far away! I bet you had wished that technology was at your school when you were my age as it's so much fun! Feel free to check out my newer posts Emily, Room 1, Auroa School, Taranaki, New Zealand

Wow! You are amazing. Not only are you a clearly a Master Chef in the making, you are an outstanding writer. What a combination!

I love the way that you have given your audience a clear overview of Technology learning first, and what that entails. Some of your audience who are overseas might think that Technology is a class where you learn about Laptops and iPads! Thanks for making that clear to them.

Secondly, you have used listing and great detail to describe what you made. Your photography is superb. Your dish could easily grace the pages of a glossy recipe book. I'm sure Donna Hay, Annabel Langbein and Jo Seager would be impressed!

Keep up the great work. You obviously have a passion for writing. It's my passion too, keep at it, it will bring you great rewards in the years to come.
